Historically, dating from the ancient Sumerian use of sheep or goats, or other items as commodity money, people have sought ways to standardize and trade contracts in the delivery of such items, to render trade itself more dependable, smooth and predictable. 

These traders, in particular the Babylonians, naturally excelled in the profession primarily due to dear nurturing of values of crystal clear transparency, "what you see is what you get" quality, spot delivery and an encouraging price.   If a merchant received a loan to fund his shipment, he would pay the lender an additional sum in exchange for the lender's guarantee to cancel the loan should the shipment be stolen.  This way, they not only secured future business, but availed credit and set forth the first insurance policy (which even the Chinese did contemporarily). 

With presence across three continents, we are virtually omnipresent, wherever there is spice, there is Kautilya!
